Who is Varagi Amman?

Varahi, aka Parameshwari among Caribbean Shaktas in Trinidad and Tobago, is a revered goddess among Shaktas from Trinidad and Tobago and, to a lesser degree Guyana, recognized as one of the Sapta Matrikas (Seven Mother Goddesses). She is a fierce and protective manifestation of Shakti, embodying the divine feminine energy. Varahi holds a unique place in Hindu spiritual traditions due to her boar-headed form and association with the goddess Durga and Lord Vishnu’s Varaha avatar. Known as a guardian of devotees, a remover of obstacles, and a fierce warrior, Varahi plays a crucial role in both devotional and tantric traditions.

Varahi’s origins are deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. She is said to have emerged from the divine energy of Varaha, the boar incarnation of Vishnu, who saved the earth by defeating the demon Hiranyaksha. Reflecting this connection, Varahi’s iconography includes a boar’s head on a human body, symbolizing strength, fearlessness, and an unyielding resolve to protect dharma.

She is typically depicted as a dark or red-hued goddess, with a crescent moon adorning her forehead. Varahi is often shown wielding weapons such as a mace, sword, or chakra, signifying her warrior nature. In some depictions, she holds a bowl of blood, symbolizing her destructive power against evil forces. Seated on a buffalo or lion, she represents the triumph of divine energy over demonic forces.

Varahi is one of the Sapta Matrikas, a group of seven mother goddesses who assist Durga in battle. Each Matrika embodies the shakti (power) of a male deity. Varahi is considered the energy of Vishnu or Yama, the god of death. As part of this group, she plays a vital role in protecting the cosmos from demonic threats and restoring balance.

Varahi is a prominent figure in Tantric practices. In this tradition, she is worshipped as an Ugra Devi (fierce goddess) who removes obstacles, protects devotees, and grants spiritual and material blessings. She is invoked for guidance in overcoming challenges, particularly those involving enemies and negative forces.

In Tantric texts, Varahi is associated with the nocturnal rituals of protection and transformation. She is considered a guardian deity, offering spiritual guidance during periods of transition and turmoil.

Varahi’s boar-headed form is laden with symbolism. The boar represents determination and the ability to unearth hidden truths, much like Varaha lifting the submerged earth. Her fierce appearance signifies her role as a protector, while her compassionate aspect reflects her nurturing and maternal qualities.

She is also seen as a symbol of fertility and abundance. In some traditions, Varahi is invoked to bless agricultural activities, as her connection to the earth signifies sustenance and prosperity. In the Arjune Davi Niraj Shakti temple, which has her as one of the temple's main deities, devotees seek her help in any troubles of malefic intent.
